On the occasion of the inauguration of the new Syriac Theological Seminary in Salzburg, His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II held a press conference at the Catholic Archbishop Residence in Salzburg. His Excellency Dr. Franz Lackner, Prof. Dr. Dietmar Winkler and Prof. Dr. Aho Shemunkasho also took part in the press conference.
His Holiness first spoke about the importance of this historical event whereby a new Syriac Theological Seminary is being inaugurated in Europe. He also stressed the importance of having such an academic institute in Salzburg, in collaboration with the Faculty of Theology at the University of Salzburg.
Questions about the current situation in the Middle East and the migration of Christians towards Europe were asked. His Holiness explained the present dangers that surround Christians in the Middle East and threaten their existence. He also hoped that the political powers might change their policy and support the presence of Christians in the Middle East by fighting terrorism and helping Christians defend themselves or providing them with international protection.
