On the occasion of the conclusion of the Centennial of the Syriac Genocide Sayfo, His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II celebrated the Holy Qurobo at St. Georges Patriarchal Cathedral in Damascus.
His Beatitude Mor Ignatius Youssef III Younan, Syriac Catholic Patriarch of Antioch and All East, also attended the Holy Qurobo.
His Holiness Patriarch Aphrem II said that the commemoration of the martyrs of Sayfo will continue to be held and their memory will always remain vivid in our hearts and collective mind. He urged decision-makers to put an end to the crisis in Syria by listening to the needs of the Syrian people and help them live peacefully in their lovely country. He reminded the international community that another Sayfo is happening to Christians in the Middle East and that terrorism and fanaticism are trying to seize the peaceful coexistence between all peoples in these countries. He also prayed for the souls of the departed martyrs of Sayfo and all those who died defending their homeland and country.
His Beatitude Patriarch Youssef III spoke about the pain we have celebrating this centennial. He also described the atrocities that happened in 1915 and the massacres of Sayfo.
Many religious leaders and representatives of Churches also attended the Holy Qurobo.
After the Holy Qurobo, His Holiness and His Beatitude headed crowds of clergy and laypeople in a candle walk from the Patriarchate to the Garden of the Syriac Martyrs in Bab Sharqi. There, His Holiness and His Beatitude presided over the service of the martyrs and lighted the flame of the commemorative monument.
