On January 1, 2022, on the occasion of the New Year and the apostolic visit of His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II to Egypt, the Parish Council of St. Mary Church in Cairo organized a reception in honor of His Holiness. Their Excellencies: Dr. Bassam Darwish, Charge d’Affaires of the Syrian Embassy in Cairo, and Dr. Bouthayna Shaaban, Political and Media Advisor, as well as members of the Syrian community residing in Egypt, and friends of our Syriac community, attended the reception.Their Eminences Archbishops: Mor Timotheos Matta Al-Khoury, Archbishop of Homs, Hama, Tartous and Environs and Interim Patriarchal Vicar in Egypt, and Mor Joseph Bali, Patriarchal Secretary and Media Office Director, were also present.His Eminence Archbishop Matta Al-Khoury welcomed the guests and gave an overview of the history of the church and the various social and humanitarian activities that it is offering in Egypt. His Holiness congratulated all on the occasion of the New Year. He spoke about the difficults times that face us and how hopeful we can be with the beginning of this year. He mentioned the need to be united and to share a common vision so that we can restore social stability to our broken societies. He encouraged the Syrian community to support its members in Egypt and in Syria.
