End of the First Stage of the Restoration – Crac des Chevaliers

On June 13, 2022, His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II participated in the conclusion of the first stage of the restoration of the Citadel of the Crac des Chevaliers, with the presence of Her Excellency Dr. Lubana Mshawah, Minister of Culture, His Excellency Mr. Bassam Barsik, Governor of Homs, and His Excellency Mr. Peter Csulak, Charge d’Affaires of the Hungarian Embassy in Damascus.

The Hungarian Mission is undertaking the restoration work in cooperation with the Syriac Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East through St. Ephrem Patriarchal Development Committee (EPDC). The work includes different stages to the full restoration of the Citadel under the patronage and support of Peter Piszmany University in Budapest.

During their tour in the citadel, the director of the restoration project explained the difficulties that they faced in order to preserve the important and unique features in the citade which give it its distinctive historical value.

His Holiness was accompanied by their Eminences Archbishops: Mor Boutros Kassis, Patriarchal Assistant and General Manager of St. Ephrem Patriarchal Development Committee (EPDC), Mor Timotheos Matta Al-Khoury, Archbishop of Homs, Hama, Tartous and Environs, and Mor Joseph Bali, Patriarchal Secretary and Media Office Director.
